Q I have a problem with anaemia – the iron deficiency type – and I think it’s probably come about because of my heavy periods. What can I take to raise my iron levels?
A This situation is very common in women, but iron deficiency anaemia can also result from other ongoing causes of blood loss as well as having heavy periods, including gastric ulcers and haemorrhoids. Iron deficiency anaemia can also occur during pregnancy or sometimes through having a poor diet. In your own case, you need to correct the blood loss you have been experiencing each month as well as raising your iron levels. Lady's mantle, yarrow and raspberry leaf are all good for reducing menstrual flow. Try any one of these herbs either on their own or use them as a mix. Take them as a tea and drink a cup three times a day. A good herb to use to improve iron levels is nettle because it contains iron and also vitamin C, which aids iron absorption, and other minerals. Again, it can be taken as a tea - tea bags can be readily bought - or, if you prefer, use the fresh herb. Drink several cups of nettle tea a day. Don't forget to add in some iron-containing foods to your diet too and ensure you have enough vitamin C. Watercress, parsley, molasses and apricots are all good sources of iron. At the same time, you should avoid drinking too much tea and coffee as both of these will reduce the body's ability to absorb iron.
